Republicans have no testicular fortitude (UPDATED)
Republicans just nixed the ANWAR development. Seems they've lost the stomach for a fight. A damn shame.
House leaders late Wednesday abandoned an attempt to push through a hotly contested plan to open an Alaskan wildlife refuge to oil drilling, fearing it would jeopardize approval of a sweeping budget bill Thursday.
They also dropped from the budget document plans to allow states to authorize oil and gas drilling off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts — regions currently under a drilling moratorium.
So we can no longer drill in a baren wasteland because the Repubs don't have the balls to challenge a bunch of eco-wackos. Christ, everyone acts like we're going pack the place border to border with pipes and rigs. The footprint will be small (I've heard as little as 40 square miles).
There is some good news:
Still, the Senate has included ANWR drilling in its budget bill and GOP leaders will push hard for any final House-Senate budget bill to include it.
If the House bill passes in a vote set for Thursday, the two chambers would appoint negotiators to work out differences between the bills. Senate Republicans could insist the ANWR drilling proposal be reinserted into the House bill, forcing a new vote by the full House.
Off shore drilling and ANWAR will help curb our need for foreign oil--WITHOUT causing irrepreble harm to the environment. Now if we can just get the Republicans to stop quaking in their boots everytime a lefty screams obsenities at them maybe we can get some stuff done.
You can find your congressman here if you want to send them a message (I did).
Hat tip Sister Toldjah.
UPDATE: Guess who brokered the deal to get ANWAR removed? A group calling themselves the Republican Main Street Partnership. And guess where they get their funding? Why, none other than billionaire unhinged lefty George Soros and his pals. Hat tip Michelle, who has also posted e-mails on the subject.
