U.S.S. Cole

Today is the anniversary of the terrorist attack on the U.S.S. Cole. Stars and Stripes has a tribute to the 17 sailors killed (link filched from Michelle, and btw, here is her column on the matter). Not much mention of it in the news, of course. Wouldn't want to remind people that terrorists have been targeting us since before 9/11. That might be confused with support for the war.

Too bad, MSM. This is a reminder that the war on terror began long before 9/11. Terrorists have been making attacks since the eighties, but we did nothing. Even now, people would rather stick their head in a hole instead of deal with the reality that these people hate us. They will continue to hate us no matter what, and backing off will simply send them the message that they have power over us.

Terrorism will continue so long as there is instability in the mideast. Peace in the middle east will lead to peace on Earth. Will we eliminate terrorism forever? Of course not. The argument is without merit. We won't eliminate rape forever either, does that mean we should not punish rapists?

As sad as it is, the dictators in the middle east are not going to just stop being dictators. They are not going to just give up all of the power and wealth just to appease a bunch of give-peace-a-chance hippies. Dictators are not kind or reasonable. You cannot treat unkind people with kindness and expect the same in return. You cannot reason with unreasonable people. Such people can only be defeated, either through revolution (not likely) or through military intervention (which is working in Iraq).

The tragedy of the U.S.S. Cole will not be forgotten by us, even if it is forgotten by the MSM.
